The fifth and sixth grades sponsored "Helping Hands for the Homeless"
this month, collecting personal
care items to donate to Joseph's House, a homeless shelter in
downtown Troy. Organized by Don Stevens, Mary Pat Murtagh and
Kristen Lombard, the drive garnered over 20 laundry baskets
full of items. Student volunteers went classroom to
classroom each morning to collect donations.
Mrs. Bulmer, the art teacher, created
a "helping hands" quilt to help celebrate the
student's generosity. Each student who donated an item had
his/her name added to the work of art, which is prominently
displayed in the entry hallway at WES. |

Students were glad that they were able
to do their share in helping others during this season of
giving. "The homeless need our help," said Lizarah Johnson,
a 6th grader who helped out with the project. "Especially
around the holidays," agreed Kiersten Rifenbach, another 6th
grader. |
