February 5, 2010 The competition was hot as classroom spelling champions in grades four through six met to go head to head at WES's annual spelling bee yesterday. This year's bee contestants did exceedingly well. So well in fact that "King Bee" moderator Mr. Roberts started worrying that he would run out of words!
"We went through almost 140 words in the 8 rounds, which might be a record for us!" he said after the competition.
The spellers went through about the beginning rounds with only a few contestants being taken out, mostly by difficult "sound-alike" words. By the seventh round, only 5 contestants remained, and the words began to get much more difficult such as enormous, consonant, and tolerant. Contestants were brought down by the words significant, commentary and successful.
Fourth grader Brandy Lance emerged victorious in the eighth round, winning the bee by correctly spelling the word 'mildew." She will be going on to represent WES at the Regional Spelling Bee later this month. Joining her will be second place finisher sixth grader and regional bee veteran, Samael O'Brien. |
