Watervliet firefighters share prevention and safety tips with students

Watervliet Elementary School had its annual Fire Safety Awareness assembly on October 17. The event coincides with National Fire Prevention/Safety Awareness Month.

Watervliet firefighters volunteered their time to educate students about fire safety and talk about the sometimes risky but always rewarding job of being a firefighter. Students had an opportunity to try on fire gear and also learn how to properly use a fire extinguisher.

Just as school fire drills where students and staff practice exiting a building in the event of an emergency, firefighters emphasized with students the importance of having a fire escape plan for home that prepares families to think fast and get out quickly when the smoke alarm sounds.
