WES lockdown drill

Watervliet Elementary School, with assistance from the Watervliet Police Department, conducted a lockdown drill this morning. State law requires lockdown drills to be practiced four times during the school year.

What is a lockdown drill?

A lockdown drill allows students and staff to practice what to do when there is an imminent threat INSIDE the school. All movement within the school is restricted. All doors are locked and secured. All cell phones are silenced. Rooms remain locked until unlocked by police.

Emergency drills are an important first step in keeping our schools, students and staff safe. The purpose of today’s exercise was to practice the procedures used in the event that district officials must put an emergency plan into action. With proper training and practice, students and staff will be better able to respond appropriately in the event of an actual emergency.

If you have any questions about this drill or other safety procedures, please contact your child’s school principal or the superintendent’s office at 629-3200.
