It was billed as the first-ever Epic Spelling Bee at Watervliet Jr./Sr. High School and E-P-I-C it was! Fifteen teams of seventh- and eighth-graders – approximately 50 students in all – met in an epic battle that tested their spelling abilities and vocabulary knowledge. Read more

Girls Modified Soccer tryouts

Girls Modified Soccer tryouts will begin August 24 from 9 11 a.m. on the turf at the high school. Tryouts are open to all girls entering grades 7, 8 and 9. Any student who is interested in trying out needs to have proof of a physical (within the last year) and a completed health history form turned into the athletic directors office prior to trying out.

No Place for Hate Anti-Bullying Program  kicked off in December with a series of positive activities for students. Meet the Teacher Night for grades 7-12 is Thursday, September 25 from 6-8 p.m. at Watervliet Jr./Sr. High School. In June, Watervliet Jr./Sr. High School welcomed a special futuristic guest: Ricky the Robot, a “humanoid robot” operated by the Capital Region BOCES’ Northeastern Regional Information Center (NERIC), visited with Ashleigh Rozell’s science classes to demonstrate the latest in robotics. Update on the Pivot Program

During the first two months of the new grade 9 Pivot Program, students have attended career assemblies featuring an FBI agent, an accountant, a news producer, an attorney and an occupational therapist. Ninth-graders have also participated in team-building activities as well as classroom projects that help build their research and writing skills, including a recent assignment that allowed them to explore their personality traits and personal interests. Fake crash simulates real consequences of drinking and driving

On Friday morning, City of Watervliet law enforcement and emergency responders raced to the scene of an accident at the corner of Hillside Drive and Wiswall Avenue near the entrance to the Watervliet Jr. /Sr. High School campus.

WJSHS lockdown drill completed

A lockdown drill at Watervliet Jr./Sr. High School this afternoon has been completed. The drill was conducted in cooperation with the Watervliet Police Department. Ongoing safety drills are required by the New York State Education Department, and provide good practice for students and staff in the event of a real emergency. The safety of our students and staff is a priority, and drills are an important way to practice and improve protocols and procedures.

On Nov. 3, a dozen or so faculty and staff members arrived at school clean shaven vowing to temporarily give their razors a rest and grow moustaches during the next 30 days (no beards, goatees or mutton chops allowed!) of Movember to call attention to and raise funds for men’s health issues. Transportation 2014-15

There are no changes to transportation all bus runs will remain the same for the 2014-2015 school year. Pick up times in Port Schuyler for high school students will remain the same: 7:15 a.m., 7:30 a.m., and 7:43 a.m. Elementary and high school arrival and dismissal times will remain the same, as well.
