Preparing for NYS grades 3-8 exams

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is hard to believe that it is already the middle of March, a month that bridges winter and spring and one in which we must prepare for the New York State assessments.

The New York State assessments will be given in the areas of mathematics, English/Language Arts, and Science. The ELA and math assessments are given to all students 3-8 while the science assessment is given only to fourth and eighth graders.

The dates for the 2018 Grades 3-8 NYS Assessments are as follows:

Wednesday, April 11 & Thursday, April 12: Grades 3-8 ELA Assessments

Tuesday, May 1 & Wednesday, May 2: Grades 3-8 Math Assessments

●   May 23 - June 1: Grade 4 Science Performance Test

Monday, June 4: Grade 4 & 8 Science Written Test

Students and teachers have been working tirelessly to prepare not only for these tests, but for any and all tests that students will take from now through the end of the year. Please remember assessments are a great tool for educators to improve instruction and student learning. State assessments also provide valuable information about the performance of your school and district. Please join us over the next few weeks in encouraging your child to put forth their best efforts.

If you plan on your son or daughter refusing to participate in the NYS assessments, we ask you consider this: The New York State Education Department announced some adjustments to the tests in response to concerns from parents and educators after last year’s state exams. There is a moratorium on student growth scores tied to teacher performance; tests are no longer timed, giving students the opportunity to work at their own pace. Additionally, there will be fewer questions, all which have been reviewed by educators. Please consider having your child participate in these assessments.

If you have any questions or concerns about the NYS assessments, submit a letter in writing to your child’s classroom teacher by the Friday preceding the state assessment. For the NYS ELA assessment we must hear from you by Friday, April 6; for the NYS Math assessment we will need to hear from you by Friday, April 27 and for the Science Assessment, June 1.

Happy Spring,

Mr. Ryan Groat, Principal WJSHS
