Lockdown drill at WES complete
A lockdown drill at the Watervliet Elementary School was completed today with the cooperation of the Watervliet Police Department. A lockout drill at Watervliet Jr.-Sr. High School was also practiced this morning. These were only drills. Comprehensive lockdown drills are held periodically to help the school district, staff and students be prepared in the event of an emergency.

District phone service restored; dropped calls still being reported

This morning a problem with the phone system disrupted incoming and outgoing calls at the elementary and junior-senior high schools. While service has been restored, some dropped calls are still being reported. Work to fix the problem continues.

Community chess tournament at the high school

The public is invited to participate in a free chess tournament Wednesday, Jan. 11, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the new Watervliet High School cafeteria. Open to all ages. Chess sets will be provided but players may bring their own.

Education Commissioner John B. King Jr. visited Tuesday, Dec. 20, to congratulate area teachers, including three from Watervliet, who achieved National Board Certification. Read more

Residents to cast ballots on proposed $18.9 million project Tuesday, Dec. 20

The Watervliet City School District will hold a vote on Tuesday, Dec. 20 to authorize an $18.9 million construction project that would further improve school facilities and have no impact on local property taxes. Read more

Watervliet educators achieve national gold standard credentials

Three Watervliet City School District teachers have achieved National Board Certification – a voluntary credentialing process widely considered to be the "gold standard" for teaching excellence. read more

Power restored at Watervliet Elementary School

The Watervliet Elementary School late this morning experienced a brief power outage lasting about one hour. The outage also disrupted phone service. Service was restored around noon. Emergency generators were put into operation and classes and lunch service continued throughout the outage.

Caplan to be next Watervliet superintendent

The Watervliet City School District Board of Education has announced Dr. Lori S. Caplan will be the next superintendent of schools. Dr. Caplan is currently the principal of the Watervliet Junior-Senior High School. read more

Lock down drill completed

A lock down drill was completed Wednesday, Nov. 9 at the Watervliet Junior-Senior High School with the cooperation of the Watervliet Police Department and other law enforcement agencies. Capital Region BOCES earlier this year launched a new blog, Education Speaks, devoted to thoughtful discussion of issues shaping public education in the region and the state. The Watervliet City School District has now placed a permanent link to Education Speaks on its website. Read more

A new BOCES publication released late last week seeks to clearly explain the newly enacted property tax levy cap. Understanding New York’s Property Tax Levy Cap as it relates to public schools answers some questions that parents, taxpayers and school staff members may have.

High school open house set for Monday 

The Watervliet City School District Parent Partnership Committee is holding an open house at Watervliet High School Mon., Oct. 17 from 6 to 7 p.m. There will be refreshments in the first floor conference room and student council members will provide tours. Call 629-3202 with any questions.

Go Home Early Drill on Friday, Oct. 7
All students will be dismissed 15 minutes early on Friday, Oct. 7 for the district's annual Emergency Early Release Drill. The drill is required by the Commissioner of Education to test the effectiveness of the district's transportation and communication systems in the event of an emergency. The drill replaces the Emergency Early Release drill on Nov. 10 as published in the district calendar.

Wood smoke sets off alarm

Smoke caused by the cutting of wood in a technology class set off the Watervliet Junior-Senior High School fire alarm shortly after 12 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 28. The Watervliet Fire Department responded to the scene. Students were allowed back into the building a short time later.

WHS Athletic Hall of Fame to induct one championship team and nine athletes, coaches

Congratulations to nine former student athletes and coaches, and the 1996 football team on being inducted into the 2011 Athletic Hall of Fame. This year’s honorees will be acknowledged at halftime during the Homecoming football game on Saturday, October 8. The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony takes place the evening of October 8, beginning with a dinner at 6 p.m. More information and reservation form
