What are colleges really looking for?

College entrance is very competitive – you need to stand out on paper and in person!

Admissions officers consider the following when reviewing applications:

  • A challenging high school course load
  • Grades that reflect strong effort and an upward trend
  • Solid scores on standardized tests

  • Extra-curricular participation, including leadership roles
  • Community Service
  • Steady part-time employment
  • Well-written essay that shows your personality, values and goals
  • Letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, city officials, coaches, volunteer supervisors, and/or employers
  • Initiative “above and beyond” the normal activity of a high school student
