During its February 11 meeting, the Board of Education unanimously approved moving forward with high-risk winter sports including boys and girls basketball, wrestling and cheerleading.
The vote came after Watervliet Athletic Coordinator David Wareing presented an overview of the safety protocols required of coaches and athletes to participate. Board approval is among the steps required by the Albany County Department of Health for high-risk sports to begin. Earlier this week, Albany County health officials gave school districts the green light on sports that the state has deemed higher risk due to COVID-19. The announcement was made after the county’s positivity rate dipped below the 4 percent metric for 7-day rolling average that had been established as a benchmark for resuming interscholastic sports.
