Location: Watervliet City School District

Salary: Annual salary of $50,000.00 plus benefits

  • Coordinates routes to be followed, prepares time schedules for buses, and maintain routing maps and records;
  • Coordinates school bus drivers or substitutes to scheduled bus routes;
  • Coordinates road tests, training and safety program for school bus drivers;
  • Coordinates for all special trips including after-school, field trips & athletic events;
  • Keeps daily record of mileage and number of students transported;
  • Conducts annual evaluations of transportation staff;
  • May drive a school bus in emergencies;
  • Performs a variety of related duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (Illustrative Only – View full description)

  1. Thorough knowledge of standard transportation methods and the operation of school buses;
  2. Ability to operate a school bus under all driving and road conditions;
  3. Thorough knowledge of the geography of the district;
  4. Good knowledge of the NYS Motor Vehicle Law & applicable regulation of the Public Service Comm.
  5. Ability to plan and lead the work of subordinates

Minimum Requirements

  1. Must be a resident of Albany County, preference given to residents of the City of Watervliet;
  2. Applicant will be appointed provisionally – subject to score on Civil Service Exam (date of exam TBD)
  3. Graduation from high school or equivalent and three years of experience in the operation of a school bus and/or the dispatching of school buses;
  4. Drivers must be at least 21 years of age and must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the Rules & Regulations of the NYS Commissioner of Education;
  5. Possession of Certified Driver’s License with an “S” School Bus Endorsement;
  6. Appointment is subject to fingerprint clearance.

TRANSPORTATION COORDINATOR

Distinguishing Features of the Class

This is a leadership position involving responsibility for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the transportation facilities of a school district. This position differs from that of Head School Bus Driver, Mechanic Foreman or equivalent title due to the total overall coordination of the transportation program, including leading the day-to-day work of the bus drivers. This position differs from the Transportation Supervisor in that there is not leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment. Direct leadership is exercised over all subordinate transportation personnel; however, the work is performed under general supervision of the Director of Transportation, in consultation with the school business official or superintendent of the participating district administrator. Performs related duties as required.

Typical Work Activities

  • Coordinates routes to be followed, prepares time schedules for buses, and maintains routing maps and records;
  • Coordinates school bus drivers or substitutes to scheduled bus routes;
  • Coordinates road tests, training and safety program for school bus drivers;
  • Generates periodic maintenance reports which include cost of operating individual buses such as repairs, parts, labor, gas, oil, etc. for efficient and safe operation of the fleet;
  • Prepares a wide variety of records and reports;
  • Recommends the purchase of parts and materials and prepares specifications prior to acquisition or lease of new vehicles and equipment;
  • Coordinates loading and recommends stopping and turning places for buses;
  • Coordinates for all special trips including those for athletic teams;
  • Works cooperatively with automotive repair personnel in making arrangements for bus maintenance;
  • Performs road checks during winter months and advises proper officials regarding condition;
  • Prepares state transportation reports as required;
  • Keeps daily record of mileage and number of passengers transported;
  • Investigates and files all necessary reports regarding bus accidents and/or incidents;
  • Conducts annual evaluations of transportation staff;
  • May drive a school bus in emergencies;
  • Performs a variety of related duties as required.

Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics

  • Thorough knowledge of standard transportation methods and the operation of buses;
  • Thorough knowledge of the geography of the district;
  • Good knowledge of driving safety practices;
  • Good knowledge of the New York State Motor Vehicle Law and applicable regulations of the Public Service Commission;
  • Working knowledge of automotive repair methods and of the terminology and tools of the trade;
  • Ability to plan and lead the work of subordinates;
  • Ability to keep records and make reports;
  • Ability to get along well with others;
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment;
    OR,
  2. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience in the operation of multi-passenger vehicles or the dispatching of motor equipment.

NOTE: If the position involves the operation of a school bus then the following special requirement applies: Candidates must be at least 21 years of age and possess a valid Class C or higher driver’s license with P endorsement, issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, at the time of appointment. Effective October 1, 2005, school bus drivers as defined by Section 142 of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law must possess an S endorsement on their vehicle license.
