In recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, Watervliet firefighters visited the elementary school to teach students important fire safety tips based on this year’s theme, Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.
Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries power everyday devices like phones, tablets, laptops, Smartwatches, fitness trackers, toys, e-bikes, and scooters. These batteries store a lot of energy in a small space, and if they are damaged or charged incorrectly, they can overheat, start a fire or even explode.
Lt. Tim Delisle and firefighter Phil DiPompei reminded students of the following habits for charging devices safely:
- Use the original charger that came with your device.
- Charge devices on hard, flat surfaces — never on beds or couches.
- Keep an eye on devices while charging and unplug them if they become unusually hot or give off a strong burning or chemical smell.
- If a fire breaks out, get out immediately and call 911 from a safe location.
“Early detection is the key,” said Lt. Delisle. “So, when you get home later today ask your parents to check the smoke detectors in your house to make sure they work properly.”
Students also had the opportunity to ask the firefighters questions about their work and explore a fire truck parked outside the school.
