Fiscal plan maintains programs, services, staffing; provides additional learning opportunities and resources for students
During a special meeting on Wednesday, April 23, the Watervliet Board of Education voted to adopt a proposed $ 44,082,000 budget for the 2025-26 school year.
The budget proposal for next year represents a nearly $2.7 million, or 6.5%, increase compared with the current-year budget. The spending plan will allow the district to maintain all programs, personnel and services, and will provide additional resources and learning opportunities for students. The projected state aid increase of $2 million will help offset spending and invests in supports to address the needs of all learners.
The 2025-26 proposed budget takes into account the growth in enrollment and the revenue from the tuitioning agreement between the Green Island and Watervliet school districts. It offers an opportunity to expand high school elective options that will provide students with diverse and impactful experiences.
Under this proposal, the tax levy would increase an estimated 1.77%, which is well below the district’s maximum allowable limit. Because the tax levy increase remains below the district’s allowable limit, as determined by the state’s tax “cap” formula, a simple majority of voters (50% + 1) is needed to pass the budget.
In addition to voting on the proposed school budget on Tuesday, May 20, residents will also consider a bus lease proposition, a library tax proposed by the Watervliet Public library, and elect one candidate to the Board of Education. Voting will take place from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at two polling locations: Watervliet Elementary School and the Watervliet Elks Lodge.
