WES students, staff practice safety drill

The Watervliet Elementary School conducted a lockdown drill today – Wednesday, Feb. 2 – at 9:30 a.m. Members of the Watervliet Police Department, including the district’s School Resource Officer, assisted with this morning’s drill, which lasted approximately 30 minutes.

These safety drills are practiced throughout the school year to help prepare the school district’s faculty, staff and students in the event of an emergency.

Lockdowns and other drills are required by the state and are an important part of the district’s safety plan.

What is a lockdown drill?

State law requires lockdown drills to be practiced 4 times a year. All movement within the school is restricted. All students, staff and visitors must report immediately to the nearest classroom, gym or cafeteria. All doors are locked and secured. All cell phones are silenced. Rooms remain secured until unlocked by police or a school administrator.
