WJSHS community mourns loss of student

The following message was shared with WJSHS families on Feb. 15 via One Call Now email.

Dear WJSHS Families,

The Watervliet Jr.-Sr. High School community is saddened to learn of the death of one of our students. Our hearts go out to the family of Jerome Smith, a ninth grade student, who died of injuries sustained in a car accident on Feb. 11.

Counseling, support available for students, staff

Our school will have counselors available to support students and staff through this experience. You may anticipate questions about death, and may need to talk with your child at home about their feelings. We are sharing the following online resources from the National Association of School Psychologists for addressing grief that you may find helpful.

As always, our building principals, our school counselors and social workers, and our school psychologist are all available to help answer questions or just listen. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s reactions to this loss, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Sincerely,
Ryan Groat, Principal
Watervliet Jr.-Sr. High School
