Youth Day offers students a day-in-the-life glimpse of city leadership

High school seniors got a taste of local leadership during the annual Youth Day—a longstanding tradition that’s been bringing students and City of Watervliet officials together for many years!

Approximately one dozen high school seniors stand together in front of a fire engine at the Watervliet Fire Department

The day kicked off with students meeting Mayor Charles Patricelli, council members Christopher Daus and Barbara Diamond and other City Hall department heads before diving into job shadowing adventures, getting a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to keep the city running smoothly.

From shadowing elected officials to exploring the daily grind of municipal workers, they saw it all. The group also took VIP tours of the police and fire departments (including a bird’s eye view of the city from atop a ladder truck!). Our future leaders in the making wrapped up their experience sharing what they learned during a mock city council meeting.
