In April, a crew of Character Education students joined forces with Capital Roots, Watervliet Housing Authority (WHA) and Mountainview Landscaping to plant 80 trees along 2nd Ave, 21st Street, 23rd Street and 24th Street in the city. This was the second phase of the project that the students readily jumped in to help complete. Seventeen students volunteered their time and literally got their hands dirty putting in the hard work — digging holes and planting each tree — while smiling the entire time.
Katelyn McAvoy, high school counselor and Character Education advisor, thanked Capital Roots and the WHA for the opportunity to collaborate on projects like this that make a positive impact on the community. “The whole point of Character Ed is to give back to the community and our students truly made an impact where they can watch their work take root and grow for years to come!” she said.
