A weeklong summer enrichment program shifted learning into high gear for students from Watervliet and Menands.
The science, technology, engineering, and math [STEM] enrichment program, organized by Capital Region BOCES, brought together 24 students from the two neighboring school districts to learn, work in teams and have fun at the same time.
The theme of this year’s program was cars and conductors with activities focused on building remote controlled cars and using semiconductors, said Terri Stripling, co-owner of Ten80 Education. Ten80 partnered with Capital Region BOCES and GlobalFoundries to offer the program, which took place at the Menands School during the first week in August.
“The program is really about what we call T-squared. Teamwork, tool use, technology and tenacity. These are the skills employers are looking for and we want these students to excel at,” Stripling said.
Watervliet students shared their thoughts on the summer STEM program.
“I get to play with cars while learning how to do more electronics,” said Riley Monroe, an eighth-grader.
“It’s good,” added ninth-grader Takiya Inman. “I get to learn more and be with my friends.”
