Principal letter about NYS testing

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we approach all of the events of Spring, I am touching base with our families to remind you of the upcoming state testing dates. Last year, the number of test days for the annual state assessments was reduced from three to two; this change remains in effect this year. Additionally, the 2019 Grades 3- 8 English Language Arts and math tests will continue to be untimed, meaning that as long as students are working productively, they will be given as much time as they need to complete the tests during the regular school day.

The dates for the 2019 grades 3-8 NYS assessments are as follows:

  • Tuesday, April 2 and Wednesday, April 3 ELA tests (grades 3-6)
  • Wednesday, May 1 and Thursday, May 2: Math tests (grades 3-6)
  • May 22-May 31: Grade 4 Science Performance Test (one day only)
  • Monday, June 3: Grade 4 Science Written Test

I hope that you will encourage your child to put forth their best efforts over the coming weeks as they prepare for the upcoming tests. Please remember that these assessments provide us with important information that we can use to improve education for all students. For example, if we find that a significant number of students in a grade level are struggling with a math concept, we may look at new approaches to teaching the concept or different instructional resources to use to support student learning.

If you have any questions about the upcoming tests, feel free to reach out to me by phone or via e-mail at kwebster@vlietschools.org.

Regards,
Mrs. Kelly Webster, Principal WES
