Throughout the school year, Watervliet Athletics will feature student athletes who demonstrate exemplary achievement and for demonstrating good sportsmanship throughout their respective sports seasons.

Nominated by their coaches, our Athletes of the Month for September are LJ McCarthy, Anthony Morello, and Sophia Rogers. Congratulations!

Coach Brian Ford recognizes 12th grader LJ McCarthy for his team spirit, hard work and ‘kicking it’ on defense resulting in success for the team.

“LJ embodies what it means to be a team player. He’s dependable, hard-working, and always puts the team first. His effort on the defensive end has been a major factor in the team’s success—helping secure three wins in September, during which the team surrendered only four total goals.”

Cross Country Coach Tyler Ronan commends 11th grader Anthony Morelli for his commitment to successfully going the distance.

“Anthony put in dedicated work all summer and the results have paid off. In addition to finishing in the top 3 at every Patroon Conference league meet this season, Anthony was an award winner at the Queensbury Pre-State XC Invitational and cut 45 seconds off his 5K time at the Six Flags Wild Safari Invitational in Jackson, NJ.”

Varsity Volleyball: Sophia Rogers

Coach Michelle DeGuire applauds Sophia Rogers, a ninth grader who sets the bar high by bringing her best to every match with dedication, hard work and skills.

“Sophia is a new welcome addition to the varsity program. She took on one of the most vital roles on the team as a setter. As a setter she controls the tempo and the offense. Coming from a quiet individual, she has embraced this role with hard work and dedication. She is currently ranked among the top 10 in section 2 with 56 aces out of 184 attempts, which correlates to 30% of her serves are aces. In only eight games, she has 192 assists out of 622 attempts, which also lands her in the top of section 2 with assists. Sophia’s game isn’t just about offense; she also has 66 digs ranking among the top 3 of our program.”
