Watervliet High School juniors awarded scholarships

Although much of the spotlight at the end of the school year is reserved for moving up ceremonies and high school graduation — four Watervliet High School juniors have received exciting news of their own that is worth celebrating!

Science Department Chair Walter Bowden recently presented Fiona Cheng with The Rensselaer Medal and Jordan Dalpe with the Bausch + Lomb Honorary Science Award, two prestigious STEM scholarships awarded exclusively to high school juniors.

The Rensselaer Medal

The Rensselaer Medal is a $40,000 per year scholarship opportunity through Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) that recognizes successful high school students who have distinguished themselves in mathematics and science.

The purpose of the Rensselaer Medal is to motivate students toward careers in science, engineering and technology. Fiona is eligible to receive the scholarship should she apply to, be accepted and then enroll at RPI.

Bausch + Lomb Honorary Science Award

The Bausch + Lomb Honorary Science Award recognizes exemplary academic performance in science courses throughout high school.

Jordan automatically qualifies for the Bausch + Lomb Science Scholarship, which provides outstanding high school juniors the opportunity to receive at least $5,000 per year, totaling $20,000 over four years, should he decide to enroll at the University of Rochester.

Student Sage Awards

In addition, Jaden Sierra and Bella Strack were named recipients of the Student Sage Award from Russell Sage College. This award recognizes outstanding juniors, nominated by their high school counselors, for embodying the college’s motto: “Be. Know. Do.

Awardees also receive a certificate of nomination, and a VIP invite to Sage Engage — a free, half-day conference for high school students.

Congratulations to all!
