Dozens of new trees take root in the city thanks to WJSHS Character Ed students

On November 5, students from Watervliet Jr.-Sr. High School’s Character Ed program teamed up with the Watervliet Housing Authority and Capital Roots to plant 35 trees in the city. The 18 Character Ed students received a short tutorial on how best to plant trees and then worked together in five groups — planting up to eight trees per group.

“It was a great community service opportunity for our students,” said Kate McAvoy, school counselor and Character Ed adviser. “They literally got their hands dirty digging and planting to show their support for the environment, as well.”

The Character Ed students look forward to collaborating with Capital Roots and Watervliet Housing Authority again in the spring on another project.
