High school students explore range of higher education options at HBCU College Fair

Watervliet High School juniors and seniors took an important step toward their higher education goals by attending the Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) College Fair in New York City on Nov. 15.

The student entourage and chaperones traveled to the HBCU College Fair for an opportunity to connect with admissions representatives from dozens of schools, get valuable tips on the college application process, access to scholarship resources and informative workshops, and participate in other HBCU activities.

“I thank Dr. Stevens and our high school leaders for encouraging this trip and organizing it on our behalf. I heard many of the students talking about how they regularly feel their experience is not represented in their spaces,” said Danielle McKee, Family Opportunity Center counselor and field trip chaperone. “To be in a room where they were the majority and had so much opportunity in front of them was powerful. I hope we can continue to bring our students to events like this.”

The Capital Region BOCES coordinated the HBCU College Fair field trip for high school students from its component school districts. Watervliet students joined their peers from around the region to learn about a diverse range of higher education options.
