Throughout the school year, Watervliet Athletics will highlight student athletes of the month who demonstrate good sportsmanship, exemplary athletic performance and achievement in their respective sports, academic responsibility and leadership.
Nominated by their coaches, our Athletes of the Month for December are Nylah Clarke and Johnavin Sapienza.
Nylah Clarke: Indoor Track and Field

For being a younger member of indoor track and field team, seventh-grader Nylah Clarke has impressed Coach Tyler Ronan with her work ethic and confident, capable attitude.
“Nylah is a tremendously hard worker both at practice and meets. She is a multi-event running athlete, competing in everything from the 55m to the 1000m. She has the ideal mentality that all coaches want to see in their athletes, and as a 7th grader, that’s truly an amazing quality to demonstrate.”
Johnavin Sapienza: Boys Basketball

Coach Marc Fruscio describes Johnavin Sapienza as a quiet but strong leader on the Cannoneers varsity basketball team who serves as a role model on and off the court, and has been integral to the team’s success.
“Johnavin always leads by example, on and off the basketball court. He is not the most vocal member on the team, but he is always doing the right thing. Johnavin has been a huge piece to the Cannoneers success early in the season, helping them to a 5-3 record.”
