Watervliet High School junior Jabbar Mahs has been awarded not one, but two significant scholarships from highly competitive New York colleges!

Science Department Chair Walter Bowden presented the Bausch + Lomb Honorary Science Award from the University of Rochester and the Rensselaer Medal through RPI in Troy to Jabbar on June 12. Both scholarships recognize students who have demonstrated academic excellence in science and math, and a commitment to pursuing a college degree in STEM fields.
Earning one of these scholarships is a remarkable achievement — receiving two reflects Jabbar’s work ethic and commitment to learning that has resulted in this well-deserved recognition. Congratulations Jabbar!

Scholarship details
The purpose of the Rensselaer Medal, first presented in 1916, is to motivate students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, and to recognize superlative academic achievement of high school students. Students are eligible for the $40,000 per year merit scholarship, which is guaranteed for four years, if they apply to RPI, are accepted and then enroll in the school.
The Bausch + Lomb Honorary Science Scholarship offers qualified high school juniors the opportunity to receive $5,000 per year (totaling $20,000 over four years) should they decide to enroll at the University of Rochester and be accepted. Students are selected for the Bausch + Lomb scholarship based on the following criteria:
- High achievement and rigor in science and math classes
- Positive contributions to their school and within the larger community
