Veteran Watervliet High School educator Scott Emerson was recognized by the Capital District Council for Social Studies for his outstanding work inside and outside the classroom.
Mr. Emerson, who is chairperson of the high school’s social studies department, was presented with the Robert Neiderberger Educator Award during a ceremony on May 14. The award recognizes educators for exceptional achievement in social studies education.
Mr. Emerson has served as a teacher, mentor, and leader and has left an indelible mark on Watervliet City Schools over the past 33 years. He currently teaches Government and Economics, a capstone course for high school seniors that aligns with his mission to prepare students for the “real world” and the district’s mission to “inspire, educate, and challenge every student, every day.” Mr. Emerson helps students understand societal structures and empowers them to embrace their roles as citizens, voters, and leaders.
Beyond the classroom, he encourages civic readiness and community involvement through his work with the Student Council and the National Honor Society. Mr. Emerson doesn’t just teach civic engagement—he models it, and he gives students the tools to live it.
“Since 1992, Mr. Emerson has been a part of Watervliet High School—bringing history, government, and civic engagement to life for his students,” said Watervliet Superintendent Dr. Donald Stevens. “His passion for teaching and for helping students understand their civic duties and social responsibilities in the world is not just evident—it’s contagious.”
Dr. Stevens also noted the various leadership roles that Mr. Emerson has held throughout his career, which include time as a school administrator, baseball coach—and for many years—a strong and respected voice in the Watervliet Teachers’ Association. “His commitment to advocacy—for students, for staff, and for the integrity of the profession—is unwavering,” Dr. Stevens added.
Dr. Stevens, Assistant Superintendent Kelly Webster and Watervliet High School Principal Jessie Williams attended the awards ceremony to applaud Mr. Emerson’s many years of service and dedication to the Watervliet City School District.
Congratulations, Mr. Emerson!
